About National Association of Black Journalists - Raleigh Durham

Marie Torres, Two-term President, NABJ-RDU 2019-2023

The role of the president is to advocate for members as well as the community in which we serve.  I summed up my primary mission as a chapter president with three Es…to engage, educate, and empower.  In my role, I was able to lead during a pandemic that changed how we met and served others.

Although it was a challenge, our chapter, like the rest of the world, was able to pivot, use technology, and find creative ways to still engage with each other.   We did that through various virtual panel discussions with relevant topics like mental health, understanding local Black history and the role of Black journalists as well as engaging Black law enforcement leaders during a time of social unrest.

When we were able to meet in person, we held membership recruitment mixers and college tours where we engaged local students in the field of mass communications on their college campuses.  I truly enjoyed my time as president and am proud of the work we have accomplished as a chapter during my terms.

NABJ-RDU IS SHARING THIS NOTICE of Chapter Elections:
